Bioavailability

The bioavailability of nutrients to the body is crucial for the promotion of good health, and more dramatically for our actual existence.  Bioavailability is basically the availability of a nutrient to be absorbed and used by the body.  It is very difficult to measure how bioavailable nutrients are since a number of factors can affect how the body will respond to the nutrients. In addition, bioavailability also depends on the body's physical ability to adequately perform all necessary functions related to metabolic actions. Ingested nutrients that are kept from being released for absorption are completely invaluable to our health.

The bioavailability of nutrients from the foods we eat is greatly affected by the chemical make up of the food itself. This includes how it is grown organically, how it is processed, whether or not it is fortified and how it is cooked. Foods containing less nutrients will of course be less bioavailable to the body. The body also absorbs vitamins more easily than minerals, and the continuous reduction of minerals in vegetables, for example, decreases what is available for absorption and usage.

Some nutrients affect the body's ability to absorb other nutrients and vitamins. This is why the recommended daily allowance of some vitamins and minerals cannot be determined on an individual basis, but must be assessed in relation to the intake of other nutrients. When multiple nutrients enter the body, they sometimes compete with each other for absorption.

Naturally Enhancing Bioavailability
Some nutrients can enhance the body's ability to absorb other nutrients, and others reduce this ability.  Taking probiotics can help promote a healthier intestinal tract, which can result in an improved bioavailability of certain nutrients during digestion. KM Matol offers Probiotics 24B and Probiotics 24B for women.  These products contain active strains that work together to promote a healthy flora in a natural way.
